Lionel Messi played his final match for Argentina on Tuesday, beating Benin 3-0 in a friendly at the Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires. More than 80,000 fans gave the eight-time Ballon d’Or repeated ovations. At 39, Messi played the whole game, scoring his 126th international goal from the penalty spot and providing two assists, taking his total to 208 caps. One of his passes set up defender Nicolás Otamendi, 38, who was also playing his last game for the national team.
Messi announced his international retirement in August, and the Argentine federation arranged this farewell to honour his legacy. He led his country to the 2022 World Cup, its first title in 36 years, and won two Copa América trophies, Olympic gold and a Finalissima. A drone show spelled out « Gracias Leo » before an emotional lap of honour. « I have nothing but gratitude, » he said.
